Bow strings
All strings are custom made to the highest standard and are optimised to the draw weight of the bow to ensure the most efficient release of the arrow.
When ordering, please specify the distance between the nocks of the braced bow, the loop length, the centre serving length and the centre serving offset.
Laid-in strings may have two loops, or one loop with the other end left open for a bowyers knot (timber hitch) to be tied. This has the advantage that the brace height of the bow can be easially changed and also the string can be used on bows of different lengths.
Here at earthwood bows, we make 4 main types of strings:
Looped Dacron B-50 String
This type of string comes as standard on all bows. They shoot very well and should last years if properly looked after.

Laid in Dacron B-50 String
A laid in string is made using two seperate bundles of string, which cross over at each end and are then "laid in" to the main string. This means that the string that forms the loops is as thick as the main section, unlike a looped string.
Comes in black, white or striped.

Laid in Linen string
For the true traditionalist we offer laid in linen and beeswax strings. Lovingly crafted using nothing more than single shoe linen and 100% pure beeswax, these strings will look great on any traditional bow.
Even though linen is a traditional material, it is very strong and has little stretch. It easially competes with B-50 for arrow speed.

Looped Fastflight String
Fastflight has a very high tensile strength and next to no stretch. This provides amazing arrow speeds but also puts the limbs under a larger stress as the limbs must decelerate extremely quickly.
Unlike fastflight, Dacron B50 and linen strings have a small amount of stretch to them which allows the limbs to decelerate slower at the end of each shot, making them more suitable for traditional bows.
Fastflight strings may be used on longbows and flatbows but only after they have been well shot in. We recommend using a dacron B-50 or linen string for at least the first 12 months.
